There’s something frustrating about investing time into a game just for the servers to disappear one day like your progress never mattered.
And once again, Electronic Arts is catching heat after confirming that EA Sports FC Tactical is officially shutting down on May 7. From my understanding after scrubbing information from other sources, players can no longer purchase content in the game, and once the servers go offline, that’s it. Done. Gone.
What makes this situation feel even more awkward is the timing.
At the same time one EA football title is being pushed heavily into the spotlight, another is quietly being erased from existence. While gamers are downloading EA Sports FC 26 through PlayStation Plus this month, FC Tactical is basically being escorted out the back door days later.
That contrast says a lot about the current state of online gaming.
Modern gaming is slowly shifting away from ownership and more into temporary access. A lot of these live service games depend entirely on servers staying active. Once the company decides support is no longer profitable, the game can disappear regardless of how much time or money players invested into it.
That’s the part gamers are getting exhausted by.
People have built communities around these games. Friendships. Competitive teams. Content. Memories. Some creators even base entire channels around titles that can suddenly vanish with an announcement post and a shutdown date.
And honestly? This is becoming way too common in gaming lately.
Publishers move fast. One moment a game is marketed like the future of the franchise, and the next it’s being sacrificed quietly while the next new product gets pushed. For players, it creates hesitation. Why invest heavily into a game if there’s a chance it may not even exist a few years later?
As a content creator, situations like this also remind me why diversifying my content matters. Building your identity solely around one live service title can become risky when companies can pull support for it at any moment.
The gaming industry is evolving, but players are starting to ask bigger questions:
- Do we actually own the games we buy anymore?
- What happens to preservation in an all-digital future?
- And should companies be doing more for players when shutting games down?
At the end of the day, gamers understand that not every title will last forever. But communication, preservation efforts, and respecting player investment can go a long way.
Because for a lot of people, these games weren’t just apps on a screen. They were part of somebody’s lifestyle.
